Vampire Master review with a freebie at the end

Bijgewerkt op: 15 apr 2021

Author Joey W. Hill generously gifted me three of her books in her Vampire Queen Series through a contest on Goodreads. Although authors appreciate reviews, I have not been asked, forced, or persuaded to write this review. My opinions are my own and can not be bought.

In this post, I'll share my review for book 16 in the series: Vampire Master (Vampire Queen Series: Club Atlantis)

As a service submissive, I could really relate to Ella, the female lead in this story. Although I'm not an orphan like she, with an emotionally unstable mother and a dad who used alcohol to cope with his wife's behavior, I sometimes felt like one. With juggling a full-time job, raising teenagers, taking care of my home and family, my volunteering, and a very time-consuming hobby, I could most certainly relate to her busy schedule. Since Wolf kept himself aloof from Ella for so long, I had a harder time warming up to him. Because by keeping himself from her, he also kept himself from me.

Blurb

Big and bad enough to be any girl’s nightmare—or her best dream ever…

Beyond your grasp. Those are the three words that come to mind, every time Ella sees Wolf at Club Atlantis. He earns the term Master, in and out of scene, yet there is something deeper and darker about him. She wants to dive into that abyss.

Wolf sees the yearning. But the submissive he ultimately claims will become his servant, soul-bound to him for all eternity. Ella is a natural submissive, with an endless desire to please. She’s perfect for the role, really. Except Ella is a gift he doesn’t deserve.

However, vampires are wired one way—to take what they want, no matter what their conscience tells them. Even Wolf isn’t strong enough to resist his nature…or the salvation Ella’s love offers.

Warmth filled her. It was seven o’clock, earlier than she’d expected him. He wasn’t just in her head; he was here. She realized that a breath before his shadow loomed over her, his solid heat pressing against her back as his hands settled low on her waist.

“I’m liking this look,” he growled.

The glittery purple top fit sleekly over her breasts and nipped into points at her waist and the small of her back. The shirt fluttered over a pair of skin-tight pants that flared at the knee and were a mind-boggling swirl of purple and orange. She’d added a belt of wide white links and tied a purple scarf around her hair. She wiggled her hips and did a little turn for him.

At her first look, she laughed out loud in delight. With a wry smile, he backed off so she could get the full effect, though he retained her hand. Wolf was rocking the disco era look in black polyester slacks and a silk, dark red and black patterned shirt. It was open at the throat, revealing a gold chain with two charms—a peace symbol and a Christian cross. He made the whole ensemble seriously sexy.

“You look…wow. Hey, were you serious? Do you know the Hustle?”

“It’s been awhile.” He pulled her away from the pages. He didn’t even look at them. Instead, he took her hands, shifting her to his side so they were hip to hip, ready for the opening step. “Have you figured out the basics?”

“Pretty much. You lead and I’ll follow.”

“What every Master likes to hear.”

He took the lead with confidence. The man could work it. She couldn’t take her eyes off the relaxed movements of his hips, waist and shoulders. He had the rhythm of a natural dancer. As he spun her around, she heard whistles and cheers from the bar area.

Wolf grinned before he turned her so she was facing outward, her backside against him as he folded his arms over her and bent his head to kiss her throat. He gave her a discreet, thrilling brush with his fangs.

Are you hungry, Master? She ventured shyly.

For a variety of things. Blood, your sweet cunt, your mouth, your scent, the feel of your hands. I’m going to start taking you home with me so I can fall asleep inside your body, hold you pinned underneath me as long as the sun is in the sky.

Her breath caught.

Review

Although Vampire Master is part of a series, you don't need to read the books in order. Yes, there are secondary characters, who clearly have their own story. Yes, you might enjoy it more if you know all that happened before. So yes, you might want to read them in order, but no, you don't need to, and I didn't because this is my first.

I am familiar with the author and have devoured her Knights of the Boardroom but for you who aren't let me explain a bit about her writing style. The author is active in the BDSM lifestyle and knowledgeable about scenes, practices, and power exchange, but her books aren't (exactly) about practicing BDSM in a safe, sane, and consensual or even risk-aware consensual kink. Her books can flay you open like a whip, and grab you by the throat until you see stars. Her characters are flawed, dark, but they aren't loveless. Rather the opposite!

Vampire Master isn't different. Ella is sweet, (almost) naively trusting, and forgiving. She knows Wolf will hurt her, but still gives herself completely to him. Tormented by his past and his Vampire nature, Wolf doesn't let people in, and the last thing he wants is a servant - whether first, second or third mark. But even a Vampire Master can't control everything.

This story kept me on edge, as I was rooting for Ella first, and then for them both. I liked the glimpses I got into the other characters and that made me curious enough to want to read the entire series. The storyline is captivating, and the BDSM-club themes Ella comes up with are really great. Absolutely a 5-star read.
